Samui - Thailand: top 1o things to see and do

Located off the coast of Surat Thani, Samui can be reached via a 2-hour ferry. It’s one of Thailand’s most popular island resort destinations, and due to its location on the Gulf of Thailand, it has overtaken Phuket in tourist numbers since the tsunami of 2004. With abundant wildlife, spectacular corals and an intense party scene, Samui has something for every visitor.Temple of the Big BuddhaWherever they go in Thailand, most tourists enjoy visiting the areas most well-known temples. Wat Phra Yai, or the Temple of the Big Buddha, is Samui’s most popular sacred site, with its 12 metre Buddha which was built in 1972. The temple is located just off the main island on a smaller island that can be reached via a connecting bridge. Worshipers and visitors alike are expected to take off their shoes as well as to wear long pants and long sleeves. Partying and nightlifeIn addition to the Full Moon parties on a neighbouring island, there are plenty of other nightly parties to found on Samui. The red-light district is at Lamai Beach, with more reputable clubs at Chaweng, where you’ll also find restaurants with live house bands that play well into the night. Big Buddha Beach offers the most relaxed atmosphere and many of the bars and restaurants here are owned and operated by expatriates who schedule events that may appeal to western tastes.Viewing wildlifeSnake farms, aquariums, tigers and butterflies: there’s a facility that houses almost every size and specimen of wildlife on Samui. There’s a crocodile farm which hosts daily man versus beast wrestling matches. Probably the most extreme event takes place is at the buffalo stadiums, where hordes of spectators watch as gory fights between two angry buffalos take place. Another buffalo centre across town glorifies the hard-working, peaceful side of these animals with daily agricultural exhibitions and cart rides. Full Moon partiesMany tourists come to Samui exclusively for the high-energy parties held in honour of the full moon on the adjacent island of Pha Ngan. These parties are not for the faint of heart, and those who wish to join in the hedonism have to board a small boat that taxis passengers back and forth between the two islands. Half Moon Parties have also been added to the repertoire. Participants are warned to be careful boarding shuttle boats that are already overloaded with passengers, as overzealous boat operators will seldom turn down another paying passenger. Eating outThe calibre of cuisine on Samui is as reputable as any major destination in Thailand with the added benefit of the freshest seafood money can buy. Beachfront restaurants offer an amazingly relaxed atmosphere, sometimes right on the sand, where patrons can enjoy some fabulous local food at moderate prices. The most authentic food can be had for almost nothing at the roadside vendors and noodle shops. Meanwhile, tastes of home can be had all over the major tourist areas as well, with a broad spectrum of international cuisine available.Daytrip southSamuis south side stands in stark contrast to the highly developed, northern part of the island. Here, you’ll find secluded beaches, quiet fishing villages that are mostly inhabited by a predominately Muslim population and rowed groves of coconut palms. There is an aquarium that warrants a visit as well as some interesting temples and chedis (pagodas).BeachesIt seems like almost every daytrip worth taking on the island of Samui is to one of its many spectacular beaches. The variety of water sports makes Lamai Beach popular for families, while the luxurious accommodation and seclusion of Choeng Mon makes for a more romantic stay. Ao Tong Takian is also known as Silver Beach in light of its shimmering sand and clear waters. Chaweng Beach is the most popular and can become quite crowded during peak seasons however it has become popular for a reason and is a must-see for all visitors to Samui.Diving Advanced and beginner divers head to Samui to capitalise on the island’s coral reefs and hospitable diving scene. The most enthusiastic divers may wish to head to Koh Tao, which isn’t that far away and proudly boasts the best diving conditions in all of Thailand. Those staying closer to Samui may wish to visit Ang Thong National Marine Park, which is a wonderful nature reserve spread across 40 islands. Meanwhile, those trying out their fins for the first time can take lessons at one of the many dive shops at Lamai, Chaweng or Bo Phut. Adventure sportsIf the adrenaline produced from the constant parties isn’t enough, try boosting it with a bungee jump during daylight hours. This popular leap can be taken in Chawang near the Reggae Bar. Whole families will enjoy go-karting or elephant trekking through the jungle. Another adventurous offering is the Samui Shooting Range in Chawang, which is open every day.WaterfallsMany tourists enjoy visiting the waterfalls of Samui, which allow for a cooling freshwater swim and make a good spot for a picnic. Na Muang Fall 1 cascades down a cliff more than 120 feet tall, while its counterpart, Na Muang Fall 2, is a popular spot for trekking troupes and caravans of elephant riders. Hin Lat Fall is just south of Na Thon and boasts magnificent scenery and an abundance of plant life.About AuthorAndy Burrows visits Thailand every year and Samui is one of his favourites. Powerboat Grand Prix In Malta

Mediterranean Malta has been chosen for the first weekend of races for this year’s Powerboat Grand Prix’s, with the island’s capital Valletta hosting the team and spectators. The event takes place on the weekend of May 5 and 6, and the tourists attending the event will be a welcome boost for the island’s holiday industry. In an important year for Malta’s hotels and holidays, events like the Powerboat Grand Prix in May and the International Air Show in September help the island gain extra publicity outside of the mainstream holiday news, and as well as attracting extra visitors as a direct result helps give those who are on holiday in Malta at the time an impression of activity, something Malta has lacked for some time compared to the Spanish Islands who compete for the same holidaymakers. With the arrival of more holidaymakers, the possibility of increased property sales to overseas buyers becomes more of a reality.A UK company specialising in Malta property agree that property prices could rise in 2007.’With lower fares, Malta becomes a destination viable for 3 and 4 days trips a few times a year from the UK, and that will attract buyers to look at Malta in the same way they do France and Spain when considering where to buy a holiday home abroad. The weather in Malta and low fares could be a magnet for buyers.’There is a warning however from a Malta travel guide that property prices on the island might not necessarily escalate in the same way that regions of France have seen when low cost airlines have started flying to their region.’The Malta government has allowed more land to be used for property, and we anticipate a lot more apartment blocks being built short and medium term. Supply might well meet demand. Unless the Malta map changes politically and with it a change of policy towards her environment, there is a danger of Malta becoming the Tower Hamlets of the Mediterranean, or 1970’s Spain where development spoiled much of the coast.’Concern has also been expressed on the island about the infrastructure, with some tourists and potential property investors berating the state of the roads and - compared to mainland European and UK standards - dangerous construction sites.’The real winners from the low cost flights could be the Malta hotels rather than the property industry’, conclude the guide. ‘We envisage a lot more people taking short three and four day Malta holidays, often booking their flights and hotels on the internet rather than via a traditional high street travel agent chain’.Malta Flight TimeWith a flight time of over three hours from their main market, Malta has always had a starting disadvantage compared to her main holiday competitors of Spain and her islands. But Malta does appeal to visitors from the British Isles who want a holiday in the Mediterranean with a location that speaks English and drives on the left. And for this both the islands of Malta and Cyprus fit the bill.Malta is a slightly shorter flying time from the UK than Cyprus, but critically the UK has a large Greek Cypriot community able to urge friends and work colleagues to take a first holiday to the island. But critically Cyprus has beaten Malta on price in recent years, and a recent report by the World Economic Forum indicates that 2007 will see no change. Indeed the report says that as well as Cyprus, Greece, Portugal and Spain are all set to be cheaper for UK holidaymakers than Malta this year. The report says as well as price, Malta’s environment acts as a deterrent to many potential tourists. The report comes as a surprise to many on the island as low cost flights started in November 2005 from London’s Luton Airport, and in February from Dublin with Ryannair, while competitor Air Malta have a new route from Liverpool. Some 85,000 extra tourists could be visiting Malta in 2007 due to the new low cost routes, and anything below this figure will be disappointing for the island’s hotels and holidays industry.About AuthorYourMalta.com offers information about Malta and flight to Malta times plus a Malta map .Source: ArticleTrader.com

Online holiday reviews are becoming increasingly valuable

Ever since the birth of the web, people have turned to travel sites to find the best possible deals on flights and hotels. And as the internet’s second generation of sites - popularly known as Web 2.0 - gathers momentum, the burgeoning number of social network sites, wikis and other communication tools has ensured that holiday reviews have become an integral part of todays travel sites. As more and more web users develop their own blogs and user-generated content spreads itself across the web, the importance of first-hand holiday reviews are becoming of paramount importance to prospective travellers before they book their holidays. Whether it’s user-generated video footage on popular online video sites, like YouTube, or holiday resort ratings on travel sites, holiday reviews indicate real user opinion; and in a market that’s becoming overly penetrated by press releases and corporate jargon, first-hand opinions are of crucial value to the discerning travel consumer.Yahoo!, one of the world’s leading search engines, has long provided a travel forum for people who desire to write reviews on their holiday experiences. From Cornwall to Siberia, Yahoo! Travel’s resources provide prospective travellers with information on the best attractions and restaurants for a particular destination, as voted for by Yahoo! users. Trip Advisor is another popular holiday reviews site that claims to hold over five million traveller reviews and opinions on particular vacation spots. With a ‘rants and raves’ column, as well as the opportunity to post candid photos and interesting video clips, Trip Advisor acts as a working example of the importance of holiday reviews and user opinion to modern day travellers. Many newspapers in the UK have also realised the importance of online travel reviews; for example, the Guardian, the Times and the Daily Mail all offer comprehensive travel reviews sections, allowing their readers to express their opinions on recent holidays. However, because anyone can post a review, its becoming a growing problem for these travel websites that many holiday destinations are being subject to fake reviews. And, unfortunately, when these fake reviews are negative, it can severely damage the reputation of a particular holiday resort or destination. Thankfully, many sites are catching on to this growing form of holiday review vandalism and acting upon it swiftly. Superbreak, for example, have just launched a My Holiday Review section, that gives all its customers the option to write a review of their holiday resort, as well as give ratings on key aspects of their holiday, such as the quality of their sleep, breakfast and staff. And since all holiday reviews that are submitted are guaranteed to be from people who have definitely been to that particular destination, this method filters out the bogus travel reviews that are more likely to appear on some other travel review sites.About AuthorAndrew Regan is an online, freelance journalist.Source: ArticleTrader.com

Shilpa Shetty’s Impact on India - UK Tourism

Guess who’s been hailed as the newest PR person for Indo-UK tourism: Shilpa Shetty’s impact on INDO-UK tourismNow knowing Bollywood film actress Shilpa Shetty’s career was already on the back-burner, her entry into the British television show was no debacle as it was made out to by the lady and her tear-streaked face confirming and denying (in true filmy fashion, some would say) the effect of a co-contestant’s supposedly racist remarks. The image conscious UK government was quick to rise to their defence and that of Shilpa’s honor to be fair, issuing statements for not standing by any such cultural issues perpetrators like Jane Goody (the baddie in the show, accused of making unkindly remarks on Ms. Shetty) and rendered their full cooperation in tailing the story via their own substantially roused media counterparts. However, the good news for Indian tourism is that post-the Big Brother TV show publicity, renewed interest in India’s spirituality and level of tolerance (we did issue an invitation to Jane Goody to cleanse her impure and overly aggressive thoughts by visiting Indian spa’s etc!) have done the rounds for great marketing and the impact on Indo-UK tourism is all hunky-dory- at least on political say-so.The event that sparked off the debate on the Indo-UK tourism sector being affected by Shilpa Shetty’s appearance on the Big Brother TV show was the instance of a ‘not-so-nice-name-calling’ by a fellow contestant, which comprised allegedly racist remarks. India however, put up a brave front and made a public statement in January that the allegations of racist attacks on actor Shilpa Shetty in a British television show would not impact ties between the two countries, including the Indo-UK tourism sector, which stands to gain a lot by way of India having taken such a generous stand and once again emerging as the land of immense spirituality and magnitude of emotions. Rome hotels are just like Rome: ancient, not old

Rome is an ancient city, not an old one. So are the hotels located in Rome city centre: ancient, historical, beautiful of that beauty that comes from winning the passing of time. Old is something that used to be beautiful, but its not anymore. Rome instead is still wondrous: more chaotic, more urban, probably more complicated, but just as breathtaking as it was two thousand years ago, or in the middle age, or in the Renaissance, or in every historic period you can think of.Rome its changed, but only where it needed to. So if youre booking a very central located hotel in Rome for your holidays in Italy and youre worrying about sleeping in a shabby room inside a ramshackle palace, well, theres nothing to worry about. That palace in which youre going to stay is probably from the 17th or the 18th century and because of that is probably considered a piece of art to protect and take care of by the Italian State and the Municipality of Rome: this hotel has probably been restored recently, trying not to take away from it its ancient splendour. The room on the inside will have any kind of modern comfort, including air conditioning, flat tv, cable, internet connection, private bathroom. The furniture could be of mainly two kinds: baroque, liberty or something any way classic, or more modern, maybe influenced by high design trendies. Its not unusual to have a private balcony too, overlooking unbelievable location, such as Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona.Everything I just said refers of course only to those hotels in Rome which are located in its very core, but we think its there you should look for an accommodation before travelling to the capital of Italy. To be inside the city centre means to be close to all the sightseeing musts, close to the main shopping and fashion streets, close to everything youre coming to Rome for, close to all those palaces that looks so charming and ancient on the outside, hiding on the inside a different charm, the one of modern life. To have your accommodation in the very heart of the Eternal city means to sleep between ancient splendour and modern appeal. Ancient and modern, just as your next hotel in Rome.About AuthorPaola Lo Russo is a true expert of travel to Italy.
