How do I go about getting a student loan?

I have been unemployed for about 7 months now. I want to go back to school to improve my chances of getting employment. My credit has pretty much been destroyed over that last few months and I can’t go to college without money.

How do I go about getting a student loan? Do I talk to someone at the college? Do I have to go to a bank?

My wife and I plan on buying a house within a year but I am getting job offers that pay me a higher salary. Overall, how important is length of employment in the obtaining a first mortgage?
