I’m trying to work out a settlement with the auto-insurance company over an injury that happened last December. They’re offering $ 3,500, but we want $ 5,000. I was wondering how much it would cost them in legal fees, and lawyer costs if we were to move this to court. It could help in our bartering if we know they’ll be saving money just settling. Thanks.

My friend and I are destitute and have nothing but a life of debt peonage ahead of us. I have a worthless Master’s degree from an uppity pretentious school. My consolidated federal loan will be over $ 300/month for thirty years at 5.3% fixed. The pigs who so “generously” gave me the private loan without which going to University of CHicago would have been impossible have risen the interest rate to over 8% and it goes up from here every 3 months with no way to lock it in. The feds will not let us consolidate private loans into our consolidated fed loans. I just got a 6 month deferment on the private loan but, considering the interest, should I be saving money rather than throwing it at this outrageous loan like I’m trying to put out a fire?

I will probably need to replace my car soon, but I don’t know that I want a traditional car loan because it would require having more insurance, and thus be rather expensive for me. (It’d be about double for me, as I don’t have a spotless driving record). I was wondering if instead I could get a personal loan from the bank, say in the neighborhood of $ 3-5K and use that for a car thus saving me a bunch of money by not needing collision coverage if I could pay for the car in cash.

Now the questions … is this possible, or is there usually some stipulation that you can’t use a personal loan for a car? What sort of collateral do you usually need for a personal loan? If you have good credit, can you get one w/out collateral? Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
